The flavour of Kolkata

The flavour of Kolkata
The city is known for its old alleys. One such is shot by Atanu Pal.

Did you know?

1. Sir Alfred Hitchcock learnt about New Empire and Lighthouse theatres back in US. On his visit to Kolkata, he was taken to New Empire as he had enquired about these places. He watched his cult film Psycho and was mighty impressed by his experience of the theatre. 2. The metro railway in the city carried more than 8 lac passengers on 5th October 2016- an all-time record in its history. The rush was for checking out Puja- one of the largest festivals on earth. The day in the Puja calendar is called Chaturthi. (Source: Times of India, 7th October 2016). Posted on 8th October 2016.

3. Puja in Kolkata is being referred to globally as 'The largest open-air art gallery of the world' (though its life is just for a few days). It is because of the incredible mass popularity of the use of art and myriad themes in the design of the pandals (marquee) and idols (of Hindu gods and goddesses) in most of the several thousands of pujas. The count of pujas in Kolkata in 2016 was about four thousand. Posted on 8th October 2016.

4. The old Presidency Jail was demolished to build the Victoria Memorial.
